How can I determine the type of background check a company will perform?

If a person was convicted of a felony 14 years ago, what should they do when applying for a job when asked about their criminal past? I know there are different types of background checks that companies do. For instance…A larger, national company will have the money to spend on a thourough National background check, but these types of checks are usually expensive and time consuming. On the other hand a smaller, local company may only invest in a statewide, 7 or 10 year background check as these are usually cheaper and the results are faster. How does a person with a non-violent felony coviction from 14-15 years ago deal with something like this when applying for a job that they are otherwise qualified for? I am looking into applying for a small, local trucking company, but I dont want to reveal my background if it is not neccessary as I believe they will likely only do a statewide 10 yr. background check. The company Im currently working for is small and they only did a statewide.

What kind of things can cause you to fail a pre-employment background check?

I just got into a Dealer school at a casino. You have to get a gaming license from the state before you can be on the gaming floor. Apparently they do a thorough background check. I have no criminal history or anything, but anytime someone says background check it can cause you to worry. What can cause you to fail a state background check? Answers from anyone in the casino industry would be appreciated.

Can a landlord legally check your background after you have already signed the lease?

My fiance’s mother recently got into a house for rent and signed the lease, then the landlord did the background check after the lease was already signed and now wants to kick her out due to her background. I thought that a landlord has to do the background check prior to signing of the lease. Is that legal?

I’ve been a landlord now for the past 10 years and I’ve acquired many properties in various states. Now I have to make sure I properly screen my tenants to protect my investments. Is there a good tenant background checks service where I can get a complete background check on my tenants without hiring any to do it for me?

How many years back does the background check go to pass the bar and practice law?

Charles E asked:

I am considering law school, but got a felony when I was 18 years old (12 years ago) and am not sure if that would preclude my acceptance to the bar. I was told that no background check goes back further than 10 years, but I’m concerned that the fingerprint check for the moral and character fitness section of the bar may be more extensive. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
