What is process for performing a background check on a candidate?

I am being considered as a finalist candidate for a position, and the H.R. department asked me for an official transcript, references, and submission to a criminal check. I submitted all requested documents last Tuesday.

How much time does it to complete a background check? Should I followup with them this week? Does the fact that background check is requested upon me a good thing? What is the purpose of the check and what do they want to know about me?

I may have a job at a hospital, it does not deal with money whatsoever. I don’t have the greatest credit because I’ve worked at a low paying job for a while and I am trying to get a better job..I’m responsible with paying some of my bills just I fell behind on some credit cards..
This job is at a hospital, and is it right that an actual background check takes 3-5 days?

What comes up on a basic background check for pre-employment purposes?

How does an education background check work?

I am exactly one class shy of earning the BS degree that I claimed on my CV. I walked during graduation and everything, but I never got the *incomplete* for that class cleared up and, hence, never completely fulfilled my graduation requirements.

In an education background check, do companies verify that you have the degree or just that you attended the university during the dates you claimed?

Can an employee background check discover a unmentioned previous employer?

I was laid-off due to downsizing from a company in which I was employed 11 mos. It was a customer service job in which I hated and I’d like to leave it off my resume in general. If an employer performs a background check, can they discover I once worked for a company and failed to mentioned it?
